Ford PATS — What It Is and Why It Matters
Ford's Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) was introduced in 1996 and became standard across all Ford vehicles by 2001. Every modern Ford key contains a transponder chip that communicates with the PATS module (integrated into the instrument cluster on older models, or the PCM on newer ones). If the chip isn't recognized, the engine cranks but won't start — classic PATS lockout.
PATS uses several chip types depending on the year:
- 4D60 chip (1996–2011 most Fords): Cloneable or OBD-II programmable. Most affordable Ford key service.
- 4D63 80-bit (2008–2015 F-150, Escape, Explorer): Encrypted chip requiring dealer-grade OBD-II. Cannot be cloned by generic equipment.
- Ford Intelligent Access (push-to-start, 2011–present): Full smart key. Requires Ford-specific IDS or equivalent equipment for BCM programming.
