How to Replace a Key Fob Battery — CR2032 & CR2025 Guide by Brand
Signs Your Key Fob Battery Is Dying
- Reduced range: You have to stand much closer to the car for the fob to respond — used to work from 30 feet away, now only works at 5 feet
- Intermittent response: Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't — you press lock/unlock multiple times before it responds
- Dashboard warning: Many vehicles display "Key Fob Battery Low," "Key Not Detected," or "Replace Key Battery" on the instrument cluster
- Car doesn't detect the smart key: Push-start vehicles won't start because they don't detect the fob's proximity signal
If any of these are present, try a battery replacement before calling anyone. It resolves the issue the majority of the time.
Which Battery Does My Fob Use?
Almost all key fobs use one of two sizes:
- CR2032: 3V lithium coin cell, 20mm diameter, 3.2mm thick. The most common key fob battery.
- CR2025: 3V lithium coin cell, 20mm diameter, 2.5mm thick. Slightly thinner — used in some flip keys and slimmer fob designs.
You can find both at CVS, Walgreens, Target, Walmart, or Amazon. Energizer and Duracell are reliable brands. Avoid extremely cheap no-name batteries — they can have voltage drop issues that cause intermittent fob problems even when nominally "fresh."
Battery Reference by Brand
| Brand / Model | Battery Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota (most models) | CR2032 | Smart key opens with small pry at seam |
| Lexus (most models) | CR2032 | Some models: remove blade insert first |
| Honda (most models) | CR2032 | Flip key: press button to release blade, then open fob |
| Acura (most models) | CR2032 | Same as Honda — blade release then fob opens |
| Ford (most models) | CR2032 | Flip key: use coin in slot to open |
| Lincoln (most models) | CR2032 | Same as Ford flip fob design |
| Chevrolet / GMC (most) | CR2032 | Older flip keys use CR2032; newer push-start fobs also CR2032 |
| Hyundai (most models) | CR2032 | Smart Key: locate seam on back, pry gently |
| Kia (most models) | CR2032 | Same as Hyundai — shared platform |
| Subaru (most models) | CR2032 | Flip key or proximity fob — both CR2032 |
| BMW (most models) | CR2032 | Comfort key: pry at seam. Older CAS-era key: slide battery tray |
| Mercedes Chrome Key | CR2025 | Chrome Key uses CR2025 — thinner. Slide open the back panel |
| Nissan / Infiniti | CR2032 | Intelligent Key: small pry at seam |
| Dodge / Jeep / RAM (FCA) | CR2032 | Pry at seam on back. Older remotes may use CR2016. |

How to Open the Fob and Replace the Battery
General process (applies to most fobs):
- If your fob has a fold-out blade (flip key), press the release button and fully extend the blade — this often reveals the housing seam.
- Look for a slot or notch on the fob's edge. This is usually where it can be pried apart.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, a coin, or your fingernail into the slot and gently twist/pry. The two halves should separate.
- Note the battery's orientation before removing it — the positive (+) face is typically facing up (away from the circuit board).
- Slide or pop out the old battery. Insert the new battery in the same orientation.
- Snap the fob housing back together firmly until you hear/feel it click.
- Test the fob against the vehicle.
Tips:
- Don't touch the face of the new battery with bare fingers — oils can cause corrosion over time. Handle it by the edge.
- If the housing cracks, it's usually still functional as long as the circuit board and battery contact are intact.
- If the fob still doesn't work after the battery swap, do NOT keep pressing buttons — this can drain the new battery and won't fix a programming issue.
Smart Key Dead Battery — How to Still Access and Start Your Car
If your smart key battery is completely dead, most vehicles have a backup method:
- Toyota/Lexus: Press the fob against the door handle's "Toyota" logo area or the start button. The car uses inductive power to read the key.
- Honda/Acura: Hold the fob against the door handle's sensor area (there may be a small marking). For start, place the fob against the start button.
- Ford: Use the SecuriCode keypad if available, or hold the fob against the start button.
- BMW: Open the fob and use the hidden mechanical blade to open the door manually. For push-start: place the fob in the wireless charging tray or against the start button.
- Mercedes Chrome Key: Hold the key against the door handle logo. For start, place it in the center console wireless charging tray or against the start button.
Check your owner's manual for the exact emergency access procedure for your specific model.
When a Battery Swap Doesn't Fix It — Call Us
If you've replaced the battery with a fresh, known-good battery and the fob still doesn't work, the issue is likely programming-related, not hardware:
- The fob has lost its pairing to the vehicle's ECM/BCM (more common after a vehicle battery disconnect or ECM reset)
- The fob housing has physical damage affecting the circuit board
- Rarely: the fob transmitter has failed
In any of these cases, reprogramming or fob replacement + programming is the solution. We handle this on-site in 20–30 minutes.
Battery swap didn't fix it? We reprogram key fobs on-site — 24/7 across the South Bay. Usually resolved in 30 minutes or less.
