Volkswagen Key Replacement San Jose: Jetta, Passat & Tiguan MFB Key Guide
VW's MFB Key and Megamos Crypto — Why It's Different
VW uses two overlapping key technologies:
- MFB (Multi-Function Button) remote key: The physical key housing with integrated remote functions. This is the standard VW key format for all models from 2005 onward.
- Megamos Crypto 48 transponder chip: Embedded in the key blade. Used by VW, Audi, Seat, and Skoda (all VAG brands). This is the chip the immobilizer reads when you insert the key. The 48-chip uses 128-bit rolling code encryption — one of the most complex transponder chips in civilian vehicles.
- VW / Audi MQB platform (2014–present Jetta, Tiguan, Atlas): Newer MQB cars use a combined proximity key with MFB design, requiring VCDS (VAG-COM Diagnostic System) or ODIS (Offboard Diagnostic Information System) for programming.
Why does this matter? Most generic locksmith key programmers do not support Megamos 48 or MQB platform key adds. We specifically invested in VCDS-compatible OBD-II equipment because VW is so common in the South Bay and the under-served gap is real.

VW Spare Key — Get One Before You Need It
VW keys are more expensive to replace than their Japanese counterparts, partly because of the Megamos 48 encryption. If you currently have one working VW key, this is the right time to get a duplicate made as a backup. Key addition for VW (programming a second key to coexist with the first) is the same procedure as replacement and is fully supported by our equipment.
