The FCA Sentry Key SKIM — How Jeep Anti-Theft Works

Jeep vehicles use the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM), part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' (now Stellantis) shared platform used across Jeep, Dodge, RAM, and Chrysler vehicles. The system works like this:

• Every Jeep key contains a small RFID transponder chip embedded in the head of the key or inside the fob housing.
• When you turn the ignition (or press the start button on push-to-start models), the SKIM module reads the chip's unique code.
• If the code is recognized, the SKIM sends an authorization signal to the PCM (Powertrain Control Module), which allows fuel injection and spark.
• If the chip is absent, unprogrammed, or damaged, the PCM is never authorized — the engine cranks but won't start, and the security light stays illuminated on the dashboard.

Programming a new key requires FCA-compatible OBD-II access to write the new chip's code into the SKIM's memory. This is exactly what our mobile unit is equipped to do.

Jeep Models — Key Systems by Generation

• Wrangler TJ (1997–2006): Basic transponder key, no remote entry standard. The chip must be programmed to the SKIM via OBD-II. Common issue: replacing keys that weren't cloned properly.
• Wrangler JK (2007–2018): Upgraded SKIM with remote fob. Keyhead remote (key + buttons integrated) or separate fob. Remote programming requires OBD-II SKIM access.
• Wrangler JL (2018–present): Current generation. Push-to-start available on Sport S and higher trims. Full proximity key with passive entry. Smart key programming via FCA diagnostic protocol.
• Gladiator JT (2020–present): Same JL platform, same SKIM system. Key fobs are similar but vehicle-specific pairing is required.
• Grand Cherokee WK2 (2011–2021): Push-to-start on most trims. Proximity smart key paired to the SKIM and BCM. Programming from $185.
• Grand Cherokee WL (2021–present): Latest generation with updated FCA smart key platform. We carry compatible tools for 2021–2024 models.
• Cherokee KL (2014–2023): Compact Cherokee, push-to-start on most trims. Smart key/SKIM programming via OBD-II.
• Compass / Renegade: Entry-level Jeeps using the same FCA platform. Transponder keys standard, smart key on higher trims.

The Off-Road Reality: Keys Left Inside, Keys at the Trailhead

Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator owners face a key-loss scenario unique to the off-road world: doors and top panels removed for trail use, which means pockets aren't reliable storage. Keys left in cup holders get moved. Fobs fall out during a hard trail section. It happens more than you'd think.

Jeep Key Fob Battery — When to Replace, When to Reprogram

A Jeep fob running on a weak battery will show reduced range first — you have to be closer to the vehicle for it to detect the fob. Full loss of function comes next. Before calling for a reprogram, check the battery (usually CR2032) first:

• Open the fob at the seam (most JK/JL fobs use a coin to pry apart)
• Replace the CR2032 coin cell
• Test — if the Jeep now responds, you're done
