Kia Key Fob Programming San Jose — Sportage, Telluride, Soul & EV6

Kia 📅 April 2026 ⏲ 6 min read ✎ Cabrera's Key Fob Team
Kia's lineup has grown substantially in the South Bay — the Telluride competes directly with three-row favorites, the Sportage fills commuter parking lots, and the EV6 is a growing presence in tech corridors from Sunnyvale to Milpitas. Like its Hyundai counterpart, Kia uses a PIN-code immobilizer system on 2013+ models that requires proper OBD-II diagnostics to program new keys. We're equipped for the full process, on-site, same day.

Kia Key System — Same Platform as Hyundai, Different Key IDs

Kia and Hyundai share the Hyundai Motor Group platform, which means the underlying immobilizer architecture is essentially the same. However, there's an important difference: Kia uses Kia-specific key IDs and fob part numbers that are not interchangeable with Hyundai hardware.

  • A Hyundai Tucson fob cannot be programmed to a Kia Sportage, even though the vehicles share a platform. The key IDs are model-specific.
  • Kia blanks differ from Hyundai blanks in profile and chip assignment.
  • The PIN-code immobilizer process is the same as Hyundai (retrieve PIN via OBD-II → authenticate → program key), but the Kia-specific diagnostic parameters must be used.

We carry Kia-specific blanks and fobs in our mobile unit, separate from the Hyundai stock.

Kia's Smart Key System

Kia introduced its Smart Key system (passive entry + push-button start) broadly across the lineup starting around 2016–2018. The Smart Key fob generates a low-frequency proximity signal that the vehicle detects when the key is within about 3 feet of the door handles. Pressing the door handle or start button triggers authentication.

When a Smart Key fob battery runs low, Kia vehicles display a warning message. Replace the CR2032 battery first (see our battery guide). If the vehicle still doesn't detect the fob after a fresh battery, the fob's pairing has been lost and it needs reprogramming via OBD-II. We handle this on-site.

Lost Your Only Kia Key?

Losing the only key to a Kia with a PIN-code immobilizer requires an all-keys-lost procedure — more involved than adding a second key to a running vehicle, because there's no existing key to reference during programming. The process requires:

  1. Access to the vehicle (we can assist with lockout entry)
  2. OBD-II connection to retrieve the PIN from ECU data
  3. Entering the PIN to initiate all-keys-lost programming mode
  4. Programming a fresh key fob

Total time on-site is typically 45–60 minutes. Full process explained: Can a Locksmith Make a Car Key Without the Original?
